Mr. Jonathan Drew Cutler

Mr. Jonathan Drew Cutler, a graduate student in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, is one of the six recent Van Vleet scholarship recipients. The Van Vleet Memorial Doctoral Awards are designed to assist certain departments in attracting outstanding doctoral students. The awards are renewable for four years in the amount of $16,000 per year. Jonathan is to be commended for receiving this highly competitive scholarship.

Jonathan wrote his Master's thesis in Mathematics under the direction of Dr. Richard Schelp, finishing in 2000. Since then he has been working on his Ph.D. with professor Béla Bollobás.

The Van Vleet Memorial Doctoral Awards are made possible by the generosity of the Van Vleet Foundation, established in 1964 by the late McKay Van Vleet, a Memphis civic leader and business executive.The gift to The University of Memphis was made by his wife Harriet Smith Van Vleet.

Ms. Angela Murdock won the Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award in the Department of Mathematical Sciences for 2001-2002. She was also recently elected to the Organizational Council for the Graduate Student Association, to help re-organize and rejuvenate the GSA. She is planning on pursuing a Ph. D., probably in differential equations.

The Department is proud of her skills and accomplishments.
